A Surprising and Touching Marriage Proposal

Of course, it’s easy to get cynical about the state of marriage nowadays, but I think it’s also important to keep before our eyes the essential beauty of marriage as a sacred window into the divine plan of God for mankind.

Let me apologize in advance for the somewhat blurry character of the video below, but I can find no other versions of it on the internet. The visual quality is almost immaterial, though, because the message gets through loud and clear, and it’s truly captivating.

The Finnish cell phone company, Nokia, created this wonderful commercial some fourteen years ago. It is less than one minute long and shows a young man taking pictures with his (Nokia) phone while on some kind of trip away from home.

The drama also features a young woman, who is clearly the man’s girlfriend, waiting in a dark room on a stormy night for a message from him, but when the message arrived, it wasn’t what she expected – it was better!

I won’t spoil the plot for you except to point out the huge sign above the man’s head at the very end of the video. It says “NO” which the viewer is afraid is an answer to his text message.

However, when the bus behind him pulls away, we find out that the sign is the beginning of the name NOKIA.

Very clever!

At the same time, even though the clip is a commercial for a phone, it is also great performance art that incarnates a message of love and innocent rejoicing at something that we all appreciate – the blessing of marriage.
