There is yet more involved here. When the flame is passed to our candle [symbolizes us] we are reminded that we bear the flame that we each sustain, in that the candle serves/sustains the flame in our world. And the cost....the candle surrenders itself to sustain that flame ...He must increase; I must decrease. It reminds us of how essential we are to proclaiming the Gospel by our very lives. We make a gift of our lives to sustain that flame......the cost of discipleship!
